FASTING

Fasting is the willing abstinence or reduction from some or all food, drink, or both for a period of time.  I myself have never fasted, other than for surgery or blood work.  It’s a shame, but this year, I will.

In the church there is a strong biblical base for fasting, particularly during the 40 days of Lent leading up to the celebration of Easter.  Jesus, as part of his spiritual preparation, went into the wilderness and fasted 40 days and 40 nights.  Moses also fasted 40 days and 40 nights on the mountain before receiving the Ten Commandments.

According to The Discipline of the Wesleyan Methodist church found by John Wesley; required Methodist to fast on the first Friday after New Year’s Day,

After Ladys day  **(Feast of annunciation March 25. Ladys Day commemorates the tradition of Archangel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary that she would give birth to the Christ)**.

After mid-summer day ** (June 24th in observance of Christian martyr St. John the Baptist)**

After Michaelmas day**(Feast of Michael and all Angel’s, celebrated on the 29th of September)**

Wesley himself also fasted before communion for the purpose of focusing his attention on God.

So, like I said this year I shall fast.  My drink I will avoid during lent is tea.  I drink a lot of tea!!!

God bless -Donna Dagnan
